IWS was commissioned by Amazon to deliver a comprehensive electrical infrastructure upgrade within one of its key distribution facilities.
The works centred on the installation of new distribution boards and associated electrical systems to support an expanded conveyor belt network and new warehouse extension. The project included supply intake alterations, sub-main cabling, and enhancements to the site’s fire alarm and emergency lighting systems.
Working closely with Northern Powergrid and the site’s operational team, IWS ensured seamless integration of the new electrical systems within a live, high-traffic logistics environment. The project was successfully delivered between June and July 2022, with a total value of approximately £210K.
The primary objective of this project was to enhance the site’s electrical capacity and infrastructure to accommodate increased operational demand and future expansion. IWS was tasked with delivering a fully compliant electrical upgrade that would improve the reliability and safety of power distribution across the facility.
This included ensuring sufficient electrical load for new conveyor belt systems, maintaining continuous power supply throughout, and upgrading the fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits. The works needed to be executed to a high standard with minimal disruption to the warehouse’s 24/7 operations, meeting Amazon’s stringent safety and quality assurance standards.
IWS managed and delivered the full scope of electrical works, including supply intake alterations, installation of new sub-main cables, and fitting of both main and sub distribution boards. The team coordinated directly with supply and meter operators to facilitate an upgrade to the site’s incoming power, alongside the project management of civil trenching works and Northern Powergrid operatives.
Key elements included installing a 315A main switch and supply cable for the conveyor system, a 16-way TPN distribution board to the rear of the warehouse, and an 11-way SP distribution board within the new extension. The project also included upgrading the earthing system and extending the fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits to ensure full compliance and safety coverage across the expanded site.
Delivering an electrical upgrade within a live Amazon warehouse required exceptional planning, safety management, and coordination with multiple stakeholders. IWS had to ensure all works were completed without impacting daily operations, requiring strategic scheduling and close communication with the site’s warehouse management team.
The integration with Northern Powergrid presented additional complexity, involving synchronisation of supply upgrades and civils trenching within narrow operational windows. Maintaining strict adherence to electrical regulations and site safety standards was paramount. Despite these challenges, the IWS team executed the project efficiently, ensuring all works met the required technical and operational specifications.
The project was completed on schedule and within budget, providing Amazon with a robust and scalable electrical infrastructure capable of supporting future operational growth. The installation of new distribution boards and upgraded sub-main cabling enhanced system performance, reliability, and safety across the warehouse. By extending the fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits, IWS ensured full compliance with site and statutory safety requirements.
The collaborative approach between IWS, Northern Powergrid, and Amazon’s facilities team ensured a smooth and coordinated delivery process. The result was a high-quality installation that met Amazon’s exacting standards for efficiency, resilience, and safety, reinforcing IWS’s reputation for excellence in complex electrical engineering projects.
